The Best Months to Get Married in Illinois (2026 Seasonal Guide)

·3 min read

Illinois has a classic Midwestern wedding calendar: a busy season from May to October, a short and humid summer in the middle, and a long winter that most couples avoid and the smart ones use.

The state is also tall. Galena and the Rockford hills are a week or two ahead of the Shawnee Hills in the south for fall color, and Southern Illinois is noticeably warmer and more humid in summer.

The quick answer

September and October are the best months to get married in Illinois. Warm days, cool nights, low humidity, and fall color from late September in the north to mid-October in the south. They are also the most expensive months, so book a year or more ahead.

June is the classic alternative: long evenings and green everything, before the July humidity.

For value, book winter. Chicago venues discount December to March openly. Room 1520 takes 25% off weekends, Greenhouse Loft's Saturday drops from $12,000 to $8,000, and The Haley Mansion in Joliet charges $3,000 instead of $6,500. Downstate, Pole Barn Chic in Springfield halves its Sunday rate in January to March.

For what those months cost, see how much an Illinois wedding costs.

Season by season

Spring (April and May)

Changeable. April can be warm or wet and cold in the same week, and severe storms become possible in May, especially downstate. Late May is lovely and mostly reliable, which is why many venues start peak pricing in May. Gardens like Danada House's Magnolia Garden and Anderson Japanese Gardens are at their best in spring.

Summer (June to August)

Warm to hot and often humid. Chicago's lakefront tempers the heat a little; Southern Illinois is hotter and stickier. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so an outdoor reception needs a tent or a covered fallback. Some downstate venues, like Dragonfly in Herrin, price July a little lower than the shoulder months.

Fall (September to November)

The peak. September is warm and stable, October brings the color and the highest prices (Dragonfly, Havisham House and Stein House Farm all charge most in October), and November is cooler and cheaper. Watch football weekends: University of Illinois home games fill Champaign-Urbana hotels, and Chicago has its own sports calendar to check.

Winter (December to March)

Cold, often snowy, and the best value of the year. Chicago venues are built for it, and a city wedding in January with the skyline in the snow is a genuinely good idea. December is in demand for holiday weddings; January to March are the cheapest dates. Lodges like Starved Rock and the Galena cottages make a cozy winter weekend.

Picking your date

  1. Decide whether the weather or the budget matters more. October is the best weather and the highest price; January is the reverse.
  2. For a fall wedding, book 12 to 18 months out, and check football schedules near university towns.
  3. For summer, plan for heat and storms with a covered option.
  4. For winter, pick an indoor venue and enjoy the discount.
