The Best Months to Get Married in West Virginia (2026 Seasonal Guide)

West Virginia is the one southern state where summer is a legitimately good time to get married, and the reason is elevation.

Canaan Valley sits above 3,200 feet. Snowshoe is higher. In July, when Charleston is at 88 degrees and humid, the high country is in the 70s with cool evenings and no mosquitoes. That is a real advantage over every state that borders it, and it is one most couples never think to use.

The flip side is that the same elevation makes the state's calendar more complicated than a single set of best months. Here is how it actually works.

The quick answer

Late September and October are West Virginia's best wedding months, and this is fall-foliage country of the first rank. The catch is that "peak color" is not one date, it is a three-week wave that moves down the mountains, covered below.

June is the underrated pick, particularly in the high country. The rhododendron blooms, the weather is genuinely pleasant above 2,500 feet, and you are not competing with foliage season for rooms.

For savings, January through March is the value window everywhere except the ski resorts, where it is the opposite. April and May are cheap for a reason: it is mud season.

The elevation rule

Before anything else, find your venue's elevation. It matters more than the calendar month.

A wedding at Canaan Valley in early May can still catch snow. A wedding in Huntington in early May is spring. These are 150 miles apart in the same state.

Season by season

Spring (March to May)

The weakest season, and it is worth being direct about why.

West Virginia springs are wet and slow. Snowmelt runs off the mountains through March and April, the ground stays saturated, and outdoor venues that are beautiful in October are muddy in April. High-elevation properties can see snow into the first half of May.

The good news is that this is the cheapest time to book a mountain venue that would cost meaningfully more in October. If your wedding is indoors, or your venue has a genuinely usable covered space, late May is a good value date. Redbuds and dogwoods come in through late April at lower elevations and the mountain laurel starts in May.

Summer (June to August)

The genuinely underrated season, with a strong elevation caveat.

Above 2,500 feet, June and July are excellent. Highs in the 70s, low humidity, cool nights that actually require a jacket. Rhododendron, the state flower, blooms across the high country through June and into early July and it is spectacular. If you want an outdoor mountain wedding without competing for October, this is the move.

Below 1,000 feet, the Ohio Valley towns get properly hot and humid, and Charleston or Huntington in July is much like anywhere else in the Ohio Valley.

Summer is also whitewater season on the New River and the Gauley, which means Fayetteville and the gorge area have their rafting business running. That fills some lodging but also means the area's tourism infrastructure is fully staffed and open, which is not true in every month.

Fall (September to November)

The main event, and the thing to understand is that peak color moves.

Foliage arrives at the highest elevations first, usually the first week of October in Canaan Valley and around Snowshoe. It works down and out from there: the Greenbrier Valley and the Monongahela highlands through the second week, Morgantown and the New River Gorge into the third, and the Ohio Valley and Eastern Panhandle in the last week of October into early November.

That is a genuine three-week spread inside one small state. It also means that if you miss peak at your elevation, you can drive twenty minutes down the mountain and find it.

Late September is the quiet best-value pick: the weather has already turned, the color has started at elevation, and the rates have not fully spiked.

One Saturday to check. Bridge Day is held on the third Saturday of October at the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville. It closes the bridge, brings tens of thousands of visitors and BASE jumpers, and takes every hotel room in the region. If you are marrying anywhere near the gorge, that date is off the board.

Winter (December to February)

Two different winters in one state.

In Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, and the Eastern Panhandle, winter is mild, quiet, and the cheapest time to book. An indoor winter wedding in any of those markets is good value.

In the ski country around Snowshoe, Canaan Valley, and Davis, winter is high season. Those resorts fill with skiers, rates go up rather than down, and the mountain roads become a genuine consideration for guests driving in. A February wedding at Snowshoe is possible and can be beautiful, but price it as peak season and warn your guests about the drive.

Mountain winter weather is not a formality. Snowshoe averages well over 100 inches of snow a year, and Corridor H and the smaller mountain routes can close.

Picking your date

1. Find your venue's elevation first. It determines your weather more than the month does, and it determines when your foliage peaks.
2. If you want peak color, work backward from elevation, not from a generic "mid-October" assumption.
3. Rule out Bridge Day and WVU home Saturdays for your target year.
4. Consider June seriously if you are in the high country. It is the best weather-to-price ratio in the state.
